Visas for Life: The Remarkable Story of Chiune and Yukiko Sugihara

Chiune Sugihara met Yukiko Kikuchi through her brother. Chiune was 13 years older than she. Unusual for a Japanese women at the time, she had plans for a career. Chiune proposed to Yukiko, saying that she would make a fine wife for a diplomat. She replied, "If you think of me in such a way, I will accept" Chiune and Yukiko (on right) at a picnic in Japan, 1935, the year of their marriage.
